Thing 23
My mind is currently overwhelmed with the abundance of information available in technology that could be used in the classroom. I am still struggling with how to incorporate technology that is age appropriate and valuable to the student learning. I want to use technology to enrich their learnming not just for the sake of using technology. I struggle with the best way to incorporate technology and I feel that if I had a projector in my room instead of the small tv screen to project the computer images to it would be more worthwhile for the students. I think some of the imagaes may be to small for students to properly see what it is I am trying to present with the current lack of technology at my school. This may just be my current perception and that may change the more accustom I get to using technology and what is available.
Thing 22
I just enrolled in an online reading comprehension course. There was one on guided reading that look good but there were costs associated with it. I think it's a great idea. Again just for me finding the time has been the issue. I have time now because we are isolated at home awaiting H1N1 results on my daughter so I have time. She doesn't like me being on the computer though.
optional thing
As you can see from viewing my blog, I have uploaded many youtube videos to my site. I have also uploaded some videos to my facebook which is a very easy way to upload videos just by clicking on the link.
Thing 21
I have embedded many youtube videos on to my blog that are especially useful in social studies. We are now teaching Michigan history in third grade and I have found many useful and many not so useful youtube videos. In particular I found many on logging, mining, and the potawantomi Indians. The students in my class get very excited just at the prospect of a youtube video, the idea of using it in the classroom appeals to them. I have encountered many problems of having it blocked but I was able to have our technology person temporarily unblock it on my computer. It is very nice to know that it can still be utilized if it is blocked by going through sites suck as keepvid.com.
Thing 20 b
I think students would enjoy listening to and creating Yodio at home or at school. I am not sure of the uses for third grade, we are a bit more limited at this age level. I do believe that 5-? could use this program much more freely and with greater benefits than lower elementary students. I do believe third grade would find it fun to use and listen to in a variety of subject areas. The practicality of it is another question altogether.

Podcasts could be used in any classroom to reinforce what is being taught. Primary sources could be used when available to support the curriculum and enrigh the learning for the studens.

Thing 17
A wikki is different from a blog, because with blogs you just post your thoughts and ideas. No one else can change your site, they can comment but they can't edit the blog. With a wikki page anyone can edit the page. Herein lies the problem, reliable information can be posted and then anyone can log in and change the information so that it is no longer reliable. Therefore when viewing wikki's it would be more for entertainment or planning purposes not for real information or reliable information.
It could be used for a group project for people to collaborate. However, I might worry that anyone could get on the page and sabotage the site. It could not be used as any type of assessment tool, the information is not reliable and you would have no way to monitor those who input the data or information.

Thing 13
Okay this isn't going well. I just talked to technology again and they said the flickr problem is on their end not ours. I can't create an account therefore I can use picnik because I loaded my picture and edited it however I can't import it because I don't have a flickr account.
try, try again
I hope I can get this done in time! Between being blocked from most things at school and having technical difficulties myself I am not sure I'll get my credit. Let's hope I do or I won't be happy for wasting all this time and aggrivation.
I think I did it, let's see.

Thing 12
I am going to have to try flickr.com again because the page won't display. Technical difficulties, not mine!
I can see the uses for this, it's a lot like shutterfly (chich I use) but it has more apps. Like being able to tag your photos and just search photos by their tags, nice idea. I will have to play more with it after the class is over.

Thing 11
I am trying to get slide share to here, I can't figure it out. I did get it on my facebook, easy! I don't know if I have a wiki site, I do have a pbwiki, which looks totally different then his demonstration. I really don'
t like this.

Thing 10
Well I set up a Google Document. I have heard about this several times but had never tried it. I think it has great possibilities. I think it would work more for upper elementary, middle, and high schiool. In this program you can access and work on a document from anycomputer without having to save it to a flash drive. There are many benefits to Google Doc's, including but not limited to;
Promote group collaboration
Keep track of grades, attendance, or any other data
Facilitate writing as a process by encouraging students to write in a document shared with you
Create quizzes and tests using spreadsheets forms
Encourage collaborative presentation skills by asking your students to work together on a shared presentation
Maintain, update and share lesson plans
It's definetly worth the second look!

Thing 9
I am batting 1,000 I can't get into the delicious site because the security letters I need to type won't appear for me to complete my registration! Great I quit for today!
Next thing
The whole social bookmarking won't come up on my computer, no matter what I try. The 7 things or the link before neither works! I am not sure how I am supposed to do it when I can't access the site!
Thing 8
I am totally confused with the RSS, I thought I clicked everything I needed to on bloglines and ended up with nothing. Either it isn't working or I am not doing something correctly. I think the concept is a good one to get all of your information that is of interest sent to you. I just don't know what I am doing wrong. Maybe it worked and I just think I didn't do it right, yes that's it!
Thing 7
I appreciate the people who have commented on my blogs, I know it is time consuming. I sit feverishly during planning time that hasn't been taken up by some meeting to complete my 23 things. I am always looking at the clock to see if it is time to pick up the students from their special!
As far as posting more pictures on my sight, I am a bit leary of posting my children's pictures on the internet. I don't think that is such a good idea. It makes me nervous with all the predators on the internet.

Thing 6
I find it very interesting the bloglines that you can put as monitored and your address doesn't seem to be spammed. I am not sure however how people find time to do all of this. I did the facebook, the blog, work, kids, I can't seem to keep up with it all. I am making an attempt no matter how feeble to keep up with it all. I know through it I will learn something I just hope it is worthwhile information Hopefully there is some way to manage all of this information that will benefit me and my students in the end. I let you know after I complete all 23. When does this have to be done by anyway?

Thing 5
I believe Web 2.o is mostly about posting and sharing ideas online. People who wouldn't typically be able to communicate are now able to share ideas or stream their thought for any number of people to read at any given time. It really opens up conversations and options for older students. I see seveeral uses for third grade but not as many as for older students and adults. I really enjoyed the site ToonDoo. It's an amazing site where students can create cartoons and publish them on the web or embed them into a blog. I think it is a wonderful site that has a multitude of uses.

21st century
I was reading all the information on technology and the 21st century and realized once again how we are lacking in new technology in elementary school. There are so many wonderful things we could do with our students if we only had the technology. In order to prepare our students for the future, they need to have technology in elementary school, not just high school. My district however thinks the elementary students don't need technology. I guess they are supposed to just get to high school and be expected to just know what they are doing and how to use technical skills. We are so focused on NCLB and testing that we are completely insufficiently preparing these students for today's economy and demands. We need to bring our methods and curriculum in line with today's world. Our students need to be educated in new sources of information, they need to distinguish what is reliable and what isn't reliable information. We need to upgrade our American Education system to get ahead the rest of the world to help improve our econmy!
I was reading that at some schools they even have 1st graders beginning to use powerpoint and internet tools! We need to find ways to orient our students toward the global economy. We need to achieve the right balance between core knowledge and portable skills such as critical thinking to continue learning. If the students are taught theses skills in elementary school how are they expected to just pick them up?
I did find a wonderful website Curriki.org it is unbelievable the amount of information available on this site, check it out!

Thing 3
I have never blogged before, nor have I ever read anyone's blog. This is all new to me. Sharing my thoughts publicly is fine, we all learn new things and end up being in the same implementation dip when we get started. So I don't feel overly self conscious. I just am not sure how often I would use something like this. I suppose if I were connected more, I might use it more often. Also as I further my understanding I may realize some uses for blogging. Currently however, I have my doubts. If you find some worthwhile sights for third grade teachers feel free to respond or comment to my blog;))

Thing 1
I have noticed that so far it is pretty easy setting up a blog. I am not really sure if I will use one on a regular basis. It seems rather time consuming and I am not sure what I would use it for. If I found some teachers in the same grade level and area we might be able to share our thoughts and struggles. We could also share some best practices.

class list blogs
Okay I don't think I am ahead of anyone but I can't find any current blogs for the class, just blogs from last class. So frustrating since I have no idea what I am doing!
No, I have never read a blog before. I can see where it would be nice to share ideas with other teachers who teach the same content area and to see what they are doing and share what I do. I don't think teachers should have to recreate the wheel I think we should spend our time with the students not preparing lessons that may already be out there. I can see a lot of possiblitlities if I learn how to do it correctly.
Look forward to sharing.
